ARCH1201 Project 1: house / garden - to see part a 2014 sem 1

Architecture studio 3 ARCH1201

For the first project of this course, we were asked to select a preferred 20th century house from list below;
1.Villa Muller 2. Villa Savoye 3. Villa Mairea 4. Gehry House Santa Monica 5. Bordeaux House

I have selected Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier and extended my studies on this house throughout five weeks.

In part a for project 1, we prepared precised observed 1:50 sclae drawings and model for portion of the house that can be a representative part of house.

my choice of representative part of Villa savoye was first floor that consists of longitudinal windows on four facades, rooms and garden (without ramp and stairs). I wanted to demonstrate how these windows on outcell wall relate to each room and garden and their relationship with column in terms of its use.

My observation and studies are following;

1. Complexity of room shape within simple rectangle outcell structure - Columns and outer cell walls act as a grid and irregular (but still orthogonal) shape of each room make various ways to circulate.

2. Flexible function of rooms and high level of transparency by Various types of opening such as facade windows,screens and doors, Open spaces - garden and terrace and Sliding door that connects garden and living room

3. Glazing of windows are related to function of room - for private rooms there are glazing frame of facade windows whilst public area such as living room, kitchen and garden there are less or absence of glazing frame.

4. Columns are aligned to glazing of windows so they do not disturb a person's range of vision from interior to exterior.

5. Architect brought garden into villa savoye so it makes a sense of connection between exterior lanscape and interior

6. Doors are also aligned in lines so people are able to look through doors seeing other rooms. It increases level of transparancy of house.
